Literary Card on 2015 Readers

Dear students,

This year we will be using Literary Cards while we work with our two readers of the year: The Vesuvius Mosaic and The Last Sherlock Holmes Story.

But what are these literary cards? and most importantly: how are we going to use them?

A literary card is a piece of paper that will be used right after finishing reading a chapter. It is going to help you understand main ideas of the chapter, characters’ interactions, and also new vocabulary. It will help you, as well, predict what may happen in the next chapters, involving you deeply in the novel.

We are going to use one of these cards after reading a full chapter. You will have to fill them in as intructed by your teachers, either at home or in classes. They are not going to be graded, but it is importat that you complete them because they are going to help study before each tests. Keep them in a separate folder to make their correction easier.  To that end, please hand in your teacher a folder (of any color) with a visible name tag.

The first one will be done in class with your teachers so as to have a clearer idea of how should be completed.

To take a look at the format of the literary cards, please click on the following link and a PDF version of it will be displayed:  7th Grade ISE-1 Literary Card 2015

Recreation of Vesuvius Erupting! OOOOOOHHH!

What happened when Vesuvius erupted? Watch the video and answer the questions:

1. What are your impressions on the video?

2. How do you feel about it?

The body casts

Giuseppe Fiorelli, an archaeologist, poured liquid plaster into the hollows left in the ash when the bodies had decomposed to recreate the figures at the moment of their death.

This technique has allowed casts to be made of doors, windows, stairs and other parts of the houses in Pompeii.

  1. What is your reaction to body casts?

  1. Look carefully at the plan of the House of the Vine, a typical Pompeian house. Some of the rooms are labelled. Talk with a partner about what would have happened in each space.
  2. Try to paint a picture of what it would have been like to live in a house like this.
  3. Now watch the video of the House of the Vine. Can you imagine yourself living there?

4. Now compare the House of the Vine with your own house!

The Vesuvius Mosaic

We have some wonderful mosaics in Pompeii, but I’ve never seen a better one than this!’ After the young Roman mosaic designer Felix starts work in Pompeii, his whole life changes. There he falls in love with the beautiful Greek slave Agathe, who can see into the future. When the volcano Vesuvius sends hot ash over the city, Felix – and Agathe’s brother Alcander – ride to the port of Misenum for help. But will they reach admiral Gaius Plinius in time, and will they ever see Agathe alive again?
